‘As a painter my interest is in articulating a visual response to what I encounter in my experienced environment. I paint my immediate surroundings, the world that I pass through. I believe that we are bound by a sensibility to the landscape that forms us; that there exist in us an innate responsiveness to our environment, to our place of belonging, and that with this familiarity comes an understanding that cannot be gained in any other way. My work is a documentation of place.’
The painted images are observations, moments. In that prolonged moment of contemplation, there is reverence instilled in the act of looking, in the translation a direct and simplified approach, a dialogue between light, form and colour.
‘I look to move away from a constructed way of viewing, to allow the work to be formed by the parameters true to the spirit of the nature of the enquiry – a painting embodies a passage of time; space and colour making sense only in terms of their relationships. If you paint only what you see, strip away everything that is not necessary, and it is just about shape and colour, without imposing your own order or construct or expectation, then what you must have is a truth – the essence of a thing’, the universal in the familiar’
